Zoolander Moment: Jack Wilshere
This is in light of a BBC article in which the various members of the BBC Sport team gave predictions to the starting line up for England at the Euros in 2016. Read Now
Every single person placed Jack Wilshere in that team. I feel like I am taking crazy pills again.
This isn't a personal attack on Jack Wilshere, it is just that he has been injured constantly through out his entire career. - There is something to be said for players who suffer injuries so frequently to be underserving of these multi-million pound contracts. Why is someone who can never play because of injury any better than someone who simply isn't quite good enough. Their both unlucky. However, that's a different point than the one I am making now and perhaps at some point I will explain it further.
For now, it is the idea that Jack Wilshere has achieved something in world football that has granted him status as an England starter, regardless of form.
We don't know if he will be fit or how he will be playing come the Euros, so why do people think right now that he will be in the squad? Why would they want to take him?
Does he control the tempo from the back, he does look promising there. However, he is nowhere near as successful as Carrick in that role. Maybe in a few Premier League titles time, people can argue that.
So are we looking for goals? Because he doesn't score many - 2 in 28 for England in fact. I know the two came in his last game and were both very good but lots of people have scored good goals for England. What more does Andros Townsend have to do?
Jack Wilshere has reigned over an unsuccessful Arsenal team, he has been the catalyst in a team that has been constantly under performing. Many blame other players and suggest he is hard done by, but a few changes to the team have shown that to probably be untrue.
He does have moments of top quality and I get that and if he comes back and scores loads of goals and/or takes Arsenal to another level of quality then by all means we can consider him, but until then what the hell is going on in the BBC Sport office for them all to be unanimously convinced that he deserves a place in the Euros.
The reality is that he will probably be injured but even if he isn't I personally think we need to see more from him before he nails down an England spot.
