What did we learn from Arsenal v Liverpool?

The second big clash, in my opinion (not counting Man u v Spurs),  of the season took place tonight with Arsenal facing Liverpool at the Emirates. A 0-0 draw suggests that the game was some what of an anti-climax but it was actually a fast-paced exciting contest from the two teams.

Both teams went close and the man of the match award is a straight fight between the two goal keepers, which tells you all you need to know. So what did we learn about the two teams?

Petr Cech
Cech just earned them his first points of the season. Two absolutely world class saves from Benteke and Coutinho.

Philippe Coutinho
That brings me onto Coutinho who looked very good and pulled off an incredible piece of skill to turn Bellerin inside out. However, it was an all too familiar display in which he failed to turn his good play into a goal. I am aware that that is slightly harsh on Coutinho but he has the potential to be right up there with the best. The best find a way on a regular basis.

Arsenal's Defence
Koscielny and Mertesacker were unfit for this game and therefore Arsenal's reserves has to be stretched as Callum Chambers and Gabriel Paulista came into centre back. Keeping a clean sheet is a great achievement for them but they have Cech to thank for that. Paulista seemed at home in the Premier league and, apart from a possible penalty he conceded on Benteke, played very well. Chambers however, struggled and seems to be below par with his passing, for an Arsenal team.

Liverpool's Defence
Skirtle had a really good game, as did Mignolet. I am often critical of Skirtle but have to say that today he was excellent and was a real leader for Liverpool. He almost scored and own goal but it was actually a fantastic piece of defending from him.

Who stood out?
Well no one really stood out apart from the Goal Keepers. Arsenal really don't seem to be firing on all cylinders yet. Cazorla isn't playing as well as he did last season, I still find Ozil puzzling. Gomez, the young left back for Liverpool looked like a season pro and Firmino looked assured on his debut.

Could the result have been different?
I think Wenger could have subbed on Walcott and particularly Chamberlain, earlier. Arsenal's key to success lies in the depth to their squad. Yes they need a bit more quality and more goals but having impact men on the bench of the caliber of Walcott and Chamberlain is huge. Liverpool showed flashes of a top four side although Benteke isn't showing what everyone is expecting of him yet and that is problem for them. They have similar situation to Arsenal with out the world class talent of Sanchez.

Will either of them win the title?
No, they are simply not scoring. They both grinded out a result here but they will start scoring, when they do, they could go on a run and suddenly they could look like potential title contenders. For now though, they need to catch up to Manchester City who are scoring by the bucket load.
