This Question Again - Lampard, Scholes or Gerrard?
Lampard – Lets make
this plain and simple, no one has ever matched Frank Lampard for his goal
scoring ability and consistency. Across his career he has continually proven
that he has an eye for goal that far surpasses any other player who has ever
played in the very centre of the pitch. He is not as pretty to watch as Gerrard
or Scholes but and he doesn’t spray the ball around in the same way, although do
not underestimate his vision or execution. He doesn’t control the tempo of the
game the way the other two do. However, it’s impossible to argue against
Lampard's results no matter who you are. He has done it consistently over an entire career in all competitons against all standards and I would be able to say
he was more appreciated by England supporters had a certain goal against Germany not been
disallowed.
Scholes – Scholes is
the dictator. Scholes was doing more in a football match than some people may
have ever realised. He ‘dictated the tempo’ This means that outside of
individual brilliance (which of course Manchester Utd did have) he decided how his team approached the game so when he played
well his team played well and considering he won everything a player can win,
you would have to say he was quite good at it. Many players play in his role,
few players are as praised as Scholes, only the likes of Zidane, Alonso, Xavi
& Pirlo are uttered in the same vein and perhaps Scholes was the best of
them. Carrick is currently Uniteds metronome in midfield and as well as he is
playing Paul Scholes did the same thing with an extra 10-20 goals a season.
Again not as easy as it sounds.
Gerrard – The best of
both words but not the best at both
worlds. Yes Gerrard can score like Lampard and yes he can control a game like
Scholes but not as consistently. Now I am not suggesting that Gerrard is
sporadic in his nature, it is just that he is up against two of the most
consistent performers football has ever seen. Arguments can be made that
Liverpool's team are not as good as Chelsea or Man Utd but I don’t think it is
that. I think Gerrard is prettier to watch than Lampard and can actually score
more impressive goals, just not as many. He scores more than Scholes in general though and his overriding attribute is his determination and desire, particularly in the important games.
So there it is, three
players who seem the same but are actually very different. Each with their own
unique qualities, which makes the entire article pointless. Yes I am sorry to
say it but none are better than the other. Yes you can make the argument that
Scholes is ‘the greatest ever’ but Gerrard will always be the guy who scores
unbelievable volleys in the 90th minute of important football
matches and as for Lampard? Well he scores more goals and has more assists than
either of them, so who cares if he is not as aesthetically pleasing?
