The curious case of Chelsea fc

Let's start withe the most important part of this post. We are only four games in, right now nothing is set in stone and poor form can hit any team like this at any stage of the season. However, it's clear to see Chelsea are a little different this season.

I touched on this last year, and you can read here how I, in essence, predicted this start for Chelsea. Although I do have to say, I wasn't expecting Chelsea to start as badly as they have, I was actually expecting them to start well. So why haven't they?

No Transfers
They sold Petr Cech and bought a new goalkeeper. It was a great signing. They also loaned Falcao, a player who was always going to be Diego Costa's understudy due to his poor form last season. So, for the rest of the team, they can all consider their place safe. This may have hampered them a little bit so far but they should know that they need to step up by now and their performances should have improved.

The Mourinho Factor
It's true that Mourinho never lasts more than three seasons at a club and if Chelsea continue in their current form then he could continue that trend. Mourinho seems upset by something, even Chelsea fans seem sick of his pre & post match interviews. Maybe his negative attitude is rubbing off on his players. Maybe his negative playing style is causing the players to be unadventurous or even bored. You could go as far to say they don't want to get a result for him. His lack of rotation means top players have left to play more regular football making his options very limited for when the players under perform.

The Players
At the end of the day, it is the players that need to look at themselves. Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa, Eden Hazard, Nemaja Matic, Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry have all started badly. It is as simple as that. Maybe they are naively assuming that results will start turning their way but there is an obvious lack of desire that can't be blamed on a title winning hangover. These professional footballers have to give more for their club. If not for the manager, then for the fans.

With the addition of Pedro, Chelsea have a star player but Mourinho should have bought him at the beginning of the season. There is no excuse for Chelsea assuming they didn't need him. They obviously did, before the bad run of form.

With the transfer market closing tomorrow, Chelsea need to avoid panic buying but most certainly need some extra players. These players under performing need time on the bench to motivate them to get back on the pitch.

If Pogba is an option for Chelsea then they should get him, he will strengthen their midfield and allow Fabregas to push up into the number 10 role which I believe will improve him. If they fail to sign John Stones and sign Papy Djilobodji for only £4million then they have made the right move.

If another world class player becomes available they should buy him because you can never have too many. The international break has come at a good time for them as they can reassess their motivation. However, moving forward, if they want to improve it is down to the players to show they want to win and down to Mourinho to make sure they don't feel like they can't.
